Statistical Constraints for Astrometric Binaries with Nonlinear Motion

چکیده
Useful constraints on the orbits and mass ratios of astrometric binaries in theHipparcos catalog are derived from the measured proper motion differences of Hipparcos and Tycho-2 ( ), accelerations of proper motions (̇), and second derivatives of proper motions (̈). It is shown how, in some cases, statistical bounds can be estimated for the masses of the secondary components. Two catalogs of astrometric binaries are generated, one of binaries with significant proper motion differences and the other of binaries with significant accelerations of their proper motions. Mathematical relations between the astrometric observables , ̇, and ̈ and the orbital elements are derived in the appendices. We find a remarkable difference between the distribution of spectral types of stars with large accelerations but small proper motion differences and that of stars with large proper motion differences but insignificant accelerations. The spectral type distribution for the former sample of binaries is the same as the general distribution of all stars in the Hipparcos catalog, whereas the latter sample is clearly dominated by solar-type stars, with an obvious dearth of blue stars. We point out that the latter set includes mostly binaries with long periods ( longer than about 6 yr).

Unconstrained Astrometric Orbits for Hipparcos Stars with Stochastic Solutions
A considerable number of astrometric binaries whose positions on the sky do not obey the standard model of mean position, parallax, and linear proper motion were observed by the Hipparcos satellite. Some of them remain undiscovered, and their observational data have not been properly processed with the more adequate astrometric model that includes nonlinear orbital motion. We develop an automat...
متن کاملPrinciples of statistical astrometry
We present a coherent scheme of ‘statistical astrometry’ for high-precision measurements. Statistical astrometry provides methods and tools for treating quantitatively the overall statistical effect of the presence of many individually unresolved or unmodelled astrometric binaries in a stellar ensemble. The non-linear motions of the photo-centers of these binaries give rise to deviations from l...
متن کاملRe - processing the Hipparcos Transit Data and Intermediate
Only 235 entries were processed as astrometric binaries with orbits in the Hipparcos and Tycho Catalogue (ESA 1997). However, the Intermediate Astrometric Data (IAD) and Transit Data (TD) made available by ESA make it possible to re-process the stars that turned out to be spectroscopic binaries after the completion of the Catalogue. This paper illustrates how TD and IAD may be used in conjuncti...
متن کاملThe combination of ground-based astrometric compilation catalogues with the HIPPARCOS Catalogue II. Long-term predictions and short-term predictions
The combination of ground-based astrometric compilation catalogues, such as the FK5 or the GC, with the results of the ESA Astrometric Satellite HIPPARCOS produces for many thousands of stars proper motions which are significantly more accurate than the proper motions derived from the HIPPARCOS observations alone. In Paper I (Wielen et al. 1999, A&A 347, 1046) we have presented a method of comb...
متن کاملHipparcos Astrometric Orbit and Evolutionary Status of Hr 6046
The previously known, 6-yr spectroscopic binary HR 6046 has been speculated in the past to contain a compact object as the secondary. A recent study has re-determined the orbit with great accuracy, and shown that the companion is an evolved but otherwise normal star of nearly identical mass as the primary, which is also a giant. The binary motion was detected by the Hipparcos mission but was no...
